We all form judgments about others, often without even realising it. These pre-conceived ideas — based on appearance, accent, job title, age, or past experience — help our brains make sense of the world quickly. But they can also be the invisible spark that ignites unnecessary conflict.
In workplaces and communities, assumptions can lead us to:
- Misinterpret what someone says or does
- Attribute negative intentions where none exist
- Close down dialogue before it starts
For example, thinking “they’re always difficult” or “they won’t understand” can shape how we approach conversations, often creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of misunderstanding or tension.
So how can we break the cycle?
- Pause and reflect: Before reacting, ask yourself — Am I seeing the whole picture, or just my assumptions?
- Get curious: Replace judgment with genuine curiosity. What’s behind the person’s words or actions?
- Check in: Sometimes, simply asking “Can you help me understand where you’re coming from?” opens the door to clarity and connection.
At its heart, reducing conflict starts with challenging our own thinking. By recognising our pre-conceived ideas and choosing to look beyond them, we create space for better conversations — and stronger, more inclusive relationships.
